Marketing 348 Week 3 Artificial Intelligence


Artificial intelligence is taking jobs away, but also creating a more sophisticated work force. I feel like artificial intelligence is good and bad for business. The positive part of artificial intelligence is streamlining the business process, minimizing labor and decreasing opinion based reasoning. Some of the negative aspects of this new technology is decreasing human interaction in the marketplace and ability to change the data to show false conclusions.

When I think of artificial intelligence I think of IBM's Watson winning Jeopardy against the two best players in the games history. IBM was able to create a computer that could answer verbal questions and recite back an answer with precise accuracy. With this technology already out there its only a matter of time until the computers start doing jobs at a higher level than one physical employee. The first job that will probably diminish are jobs that were sent over seas like call centers. The process of replacing these jobs with new technology is know as "No shoring" which basically means working without location. This process will increase the efficient of the company and will decrease labor costs. The other positive aspect of artificial intelligence that I see as a benefit is that there will be less opinion based reasoning and more correct solutions. Going back to the Jeopardy example Ken and Brad routinely answer questions they think are correct wrong, when Watson answered he had a much higher success rate. The only questions that he answered incorrect where questions written in a form that the computer had problems understanding. Also using artificial intelligence the computers will not have opinions on what companies they are doing business with they will only look at the data provided. I feel like in the past business environment decisions were clouded by personal connections and favors rather than data based reasoning.

Artificial intelligence is not always meant for the business process, some of the negatives include human relation skills and creating incorrect data. During the business process lots of the hard work is in person to person contact. When problems arise in business people prefer to talk to a person who is sympathetic rather than a computer generated program. I know when I have problems with a company I like to talk to an individual who I can understand because it is much more understanding than hitting buttons on a keypad. One other problem I find with artificial intelligence is that it can be manipulated. From my understanding there is always ways around technology and it takes one person to change outcomes of data. If you had a computer analyzing data for a company and someone was able to go in and change the outcome for their personal gain it would disturb the companies business processes.

I think in the next few years artificial intelligence will be a major part of the business process. With all the data collected though social media, google analytics and personal preferences we will see an entire new way of marketing products. However this new frontier has negative aspects that will have to be solved to give companies security and a person to consumer feel.
